How to Get Beachy Curls- Even When You’re Not at the Beach
Recreating beachy curls without ocean water is a lot easier than it sounds. The key to the perfect undone ‘do? Make sure your curls don't look too perfect — you want to look like you've been swimming in the ocean all day. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite products that help me achieve my own beachy waves (sans- sand)!
Fekkai Salon Professional Glossing Shampoo- $14.39
Not sure if this qualifies as a “must” for beachy waves, but this shampoo not only smells amazing; it nurtures dull hair with sun-ripened olive oil for super-shiny strands. It's gentle enough for most hair types, and it can be used as part of your daily hair-care routine. You can pick it up next time you’re strolling around and spending too much money at Target.
Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask- $3.99
You guys. I would have NEVER in a million years thought that Trader Joe’s would make an amazing conditioner, but alas, their Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask is nothing short of wonderful. FYI-- a “hair mask” is an intense conditioner, made with ingredients that moisturize and protect your lovely locks. After shampooing, leave the hair mask on for 3 minutes and rinse! You’ll thank me later.
Davines OI OIL- $23.00
Just a pea-sized drop of this magic oil on damp hair will eliminate frizz and add extra shine to your hair. It’s also a great product to use if you tend to style your hair with hot tools often (i.e. hair dryer, straightener, etc.).
Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray- $5.99
This spray is infused with natural dead sea salt and sea kelp to give the appearance of an “off-the-boardwalk” look. While your hair is still damp, mist generously before styling. Comb through evenly and style with fingers or a brush to create random texture, waves and body. Air dry naturally, use a diffuser or lightly blow-dry.
Hot Tools 24K Gold Curling Iron- $39.99
I’m an old-fashioned girl when it comes to styling tools. I just can’t get on board with the wand! I even received a super fancy wand set for Christmas and could NOT figure it out. I stick with my trusty Hot Tools 1 ¼ inch curling iron with a clamp. In my opinion, this is the optimal size for loose, bouncy waves. You don't need to curl your hair in the same direction for each section, as you want this look to be naturally wavy and not too uniform. Instead, take random sections of hair and wrap around a curling iron holding for around 3-5 seconds to curl.
Aveda air control™ light hold hair spray- $29.99
Time for the finishing touch! Gently break up your curls starting at the the roots with your fingers, tipping your head upside down and to each side. For a lasting, flexible hold, I use Aveda’s air control hair spray. This product has zero impact on the Earth’s climate and is infused with certified organic lavender, bergamot, palmarosa and other pure flower and plant essences.
