Your guide to editorial engagement photos

Engagement shoots don't necessarily have to be serious. As a documentary and editorial-style photographer in San Francisco, I always love when my couples decide to do a β€œdatenight” shoot for their engagement photos.

What do I mean by datenight?

Easy! You’ll plan a mini date with your partner & I’ll tag along to document it.

Sounds pretty fun, right?

It is! I’m even going to share some of my favorite pictures from an editorial engagement shoot in the San Francisco neighborhood, Russian Hill. We had the best time capturing cute moments around the city & ended up at a local bar called Shanghai Kelly’s for pizza and aperol spritzes.

Here are some tips for achieving those unposed & candid photos everyone’s loving right now.

1. LOCATION IS EVERYTHING

We don’t have to stick to one place for your engagement session. You might opt for several locations with a similar theme or completely change up your look! Need more location guidance? I’m here to lend a hand with that.

2. Do what you love

For an extra dose of creativity, think of places where you enjoy spending time together. Before you know it, everyone will look to YOUR shoot as their inspiration.

3. WEAR YOUR PERSONALITY ON YOUR SLEEVE (Literally!)

Choosing outfits that photograph well is important, but that doesn’t have to mean boring. Most of the time, we can get in at least one outfit change. Pack a bag and let’s have some fun! I’ve had several couples play up the high-fashion look, and others opt for a casual or classic aesthetic.
