Shagadelic- 12 Questions with Chelsea Shag

It’s been nearly two years since I first became a fan(girl) of Chelsea Shag. She and another band-mate were playing the patio at JCT Kitchen one mild January evening when her sultry voice immediately caught my attention. I swayed along to incredible covers of Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” and JT’s “Suit and Tie”, and even found myself quickly learning the refrains of Chelsea’s originals. It wasn’t until she flawlessly performed an acoustic version of Amy Winehouse’s classic “Valerie” that I knew this girl was something special. Long story short, that night she happily agreed to play at an upcoming family event, and I happily became one of Chelsea’s biggest fans.Over the past 2 years I've seen Chelsea's musical career blossom into something truly amazing. I recently caught up with Ms. Shag and talked about everything from life advice to opinions of New vs. Old Taylor and The Office. Check out our quirky conversation and make sure to catch Chelsea at one of her upcoming shows soon.

  1. Describe your “sound” in 3 words or less.Baby making music
  1. Age when you started singing/playing guitar?I've been singing since I can remember and I've been playing guitar since I was 11 years old.
  1. Describe the first concert you remember attendingHanson was my first concert at 5 years old. I remember a boy in a wheel chair that sat in front of me. I couldn't stop looking at him... I hoped he was enjoying the concert... and honestly that's all I remember.
  1. What's the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?I told my mom as a kid that I didn't believe I could sing or play guitar or write songs and she told me to do it anyways. That was the best piece of advice I've ever received.
  1. Do you have a mantra or motto?I have a private mantra I say to myself during meditation, but I also have a quote I love and try to keep in my brain at all times, "Nature doesn't hurry yet everything is accomplished." I say this when I feel impatient about where I am in my career.
  1. When was a time that you felt genuinely star struck? When I met Hiatus Kaiyote at their show. They're not a super famous band or anything, I just am in awe of their music abilities and they seem like such genuine and lovely humans. I may have cried when I met them. Okay, I cried... I just couldn't hold it together.. I love them SO much.
  1. Best venue to hear live music?I love the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Beautiful venue and great sound, always.
  1. Name 2 artists that inspire you.Jimi Hendrix and Nai Palm. Gorgeous souls.
  1. What are you currently bingeing on Netflix? The Office!!! I didn't know there was a show better than Friends until I watched this show.
  1. New Taylor or Old Taylor?Old Taylor was more pure. New Taylor is more vengeful. I can feel Old Taylor's music more deeply but I can shake my butt way harder to her new stuff. The Old Taylor and the New Taylor are like the yin yang sign - they balance each other out with their darkness and lightness. I'm just gonna say I will always like the NOW Taylor.
  2. If you were a rapper, what would your stage name be?Chelsea Swag, bitch.
  1. What is your spirit animal?Oddly enough, I think it's an alligator.
